The Weekly WORD
- On Tuesday, May 21st, at 7 p.m., Alexandra Penfold and Siobhan Wallace will cruise into Greenpoint for a celebration of New York á la Cart. Stop in for a look inside some of the best street food in the city — and for treats from Coolhaus NYC!
- Wednesday, May 22, at 7 p.m., the witty Dave Roman swings by the store for the release of his latest graphic novel, Astronaut Academy: Re-Entry. Get thirsty, ‘cause there will be party refreshments. Oh, and there will be drawing, so bring a pen.
- Thursday, May 23rd, might mark our zombie-est, literature-iest in-store event yet. Get here by 7 p.m. for a reading from A Questionable Shape, the debut novel from Bennett Sims. Following that, Sims will be in conversation with Electric Literature’s Halimah Marcus. Lastly, test your knowledge of the undead with some Zombie Trivia. Winner gets a free book! Don’t miss this!
- On Sunday, May 26th, at 2 p.m., screenwriter and prose writer Pete Jensen will be hosting a Gotham Writers Workshop in fiction. Join the group to share some of your works-in-progress, hear those of others, get some tips, and generate some new ideas.
That’s it for May, everyone. May was cool! Next up, as you know is JUNE. We kick things off with the WORD Book Group, the Romance Book Group, a launch party for The Lullaby of Polish Girls, a night devoted to HER KIND, a literary community dedicated to women in the arts, and David Samuel Levinson. And that’s just the beginning.
Love this #astronautacademyday image of Team Feety Pajamas planning one of their nefarious schemes! Great job Jake Fisher! I totally want to print this on a t-shirt!
Wonderful Doug Hiro art by Honoel A. Ibardolaza author of the super rad comic By Moon Alone! A total honor to see their take on one of my characters!
These paper cut out drawings were given to me by super-fan Owen in Toronto. They are sentimental to me because I used to make cut-out characters and toys when I was a kid too! I should probably dig those up and scan them at some point. Anyway, Owen is an amazing artist and I especially love how he drew Maribelle Mellonbelly in both her regular and goth modes!
Fantastic fan art handed to me at the Toronto Comics Art Festival this weekend by Asher W. Age 9, who wanted me to know that he can draw better! This already looks pretty good to me!
Lucy F. returns with another amazing piece of art for #astronautacademyday this time compete with digital coloring! I can’t tell you how much this drawing of Miyumi San and Billy Lee cracks me up. The expressions are priceless. Lucy is definitely on the road to being a cartoonist superstar!
Out of this world fan art of Hakata Soy by Santiago Casares! Satiago is the creator of the comic Chili’s World.

Radtastic!
My favorite character from Dave Roman’s hilarious Web comic: Astronaut Academy! If you like sci-fi, anime, off-the-wall humor, and run-on sentences, this is the comic for you!
