Cover to Astronaut Academy: Re-Entry!
Here is the final cover to Book2! The book will be printed on gold foil (in keeping with the silver foil on Book1) so this is a recreation of what the real book will look like. Design is by Colleen AF Venable. Astronaut Academy: Re-Entry will be released May 14th, 2013 from First Second Books, but you can pre-order the book on most major book websites and add it to your Goodreads lists now!

Babymouse, Smile & Astronaut Academy team up!

I drew this to help promote Graphic Novel Night at THE READING BUG in San Carlos, California on February 17th. It will be a group event with Jennifer Holm (Babymouse) and Raina Telgemeier (Smile).

Babymouse is one of the funniest kids comic series out there and Jennifer Holm is just the best. She’s also the co-creator of SQUISH (like Babymouse, drawn by her brother Matt) and a multi-Newberry Award honoree for her prose novels!

Origami Yoda!
After signing/doodling in 50 or so copies of Astronaut Academy for kids at the Churchill School, I decided to change it up by drawing an Origami Yoda. Skylar said he was a big Star Wars fan but hadn’t heard of the Tom Angleberger books yet! He thought it sounded amazing (of course).

Here is the updated version of the Doug Hiro “Can We Tumble?”  page as it appears in the Astronaut Academy: Zero Gravity graphic novel. The biggest different is the gym teacher. In the original strip he was sort of a magical elf guy, which was confusing because I already had an elven science teacher (Mr. Namagucci). So I shot the nameless elf out the airlock and replaced him with Coach McScone.
